Day 2: Slanted Sleep & Solar Solves

February 17, 2025

We woke up to a cold morning outside–and feeling a bit worse for wear after getting a poor nights’ sleep parked on a slant on the side of the road (I could have sworn my dreams were about me rolling downhill). Sheila was able to see the goats, rooster, and dogs in the farm we’d slept beside in the morning. We went back to the grocery parking lot to get a few more groceries and have a breakfast of yogurt, nuts and goji berries. We were also able to test out the kettle, Nespresso machine and milk frother–these use up quite a bit of energy!). Egg prices are still insane thanks to bird flu–$14 for a dozen eggs!

Hello

There were still a few sketchy-looking folks milling around, and there wasn’t really much grass around for Sheila to walk around in. Not having much to do, we decided to head back to the solar installation place, where we ended up staying for a few hours as they worked out the kinks (like ensuring the connections were properly done), before we were on the road again. We realized that we had a slight issue with the door, where the back door and screen door were no longer connected to each other. But not major enough to get an RV maintenance appointment, which we ended up deciding to do later.

After a very late lunch in Sacramento (MF Gyros & Burgers) and dropping off some books at Goodwill, we were excited to drive onward to Lake Tahoe, arriving there at sunset. It was so beautiful to see the snow covering the landscape as we drove along the winding road as we rose in elevation, and marvel at the final rays of the day’s sun hitting the mountain caps.

We crossed into Nevada, which looked like it was still celebrating Christmas, with festive-looking lights still strung along the roads and stores, before parking outside a 24-hour Safeway. Here, we tested our luck by sleeping there overnight. Fortunately nobody knocked on our door to kick us out, but we were woken up a number of times by a car playing super loud music, an RV deciding to park next to us, and what we guessed was a snowplow noisily making its way through the roads in the early hours of the morning. Hopefully we’ll have a good nights’ sleep soon!
